While no man is an island, some people make it incredibly difficult to not want to crave long term island status! You know you have people who just popped into your mind’s eye when you read that!!
But, and it pains me to say this, some people are literally only in our lives to challenge us, not to weaken us – though it might feel like it at times – but to strengthen us. To give us boldness in knowing how to deal with them. To give us confidence when we have to stand against them. To offer insight into the fact that while we are all made in the image of God, we are not all like God. There are some people who really seem to reflect the total opposite of God’s nature!
I’ll let Jesus describe them for us,
“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks lies he is just being himself—for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:44
Before we accepted Jesus, we actually reflected the “god of this age” satan. So it shouldn’t really be such a surprise when we encounter people are very different from us. People who think differently, act differently, speak differently, etc… I’m talking specifically about people who God has allowed to cross our path for a reason, as He leads us deeper into His presence. Why? Because it causes us to lean on Him, turn to Him, call on Him, listen to Him, follow Him much more than we realise.
I know from experience there have been people who are the complete antithesis of who I expect them to be. Why? Because in my naiavity, I have believed people I come across, particularly in a Church setting, will tend to think and behave in a similar way; after all, aren’t we are all on a journey, working out our salvation, and allowing the Holy Spirit to bring about His fruit in our lives??
But while for most of us, that’s just the thing – we are on a journey. We don’t always get it right, but we’re moving forward into the fullness of Who God is and what He has planned for our lives. Step-by-step…sometimes forward, sometimes backward!
But, as I’ve said before, there are wolves in sheep’s clothing, who will purposely not be who you think they are, for they’re
“…like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but inside are full of dead men’s bones and everything unclean.” Matthew 23:27
OK, so Jesus wouldn’t have really done the mic drop thing! But if He did!!
I know of some people who will literally not think twice about spending all they have on their outward appearance, but in reality – they stink! I mostly mean spiritually; although I actually knew of one person who would spend hundreds on designer gear, but was the only person I knew who could still smell of b.o. straight after being in the shower.
Sometimes God allows people to come into our lives in order to challenge us. It’s not a nice feeling – especially when they are hurtful, venomous, abusive (please understand I am NOT talking about physical/sexual abuse – this is NOT how God works!!!), intimidating, or any other harsh word you can think of, but God can and does turn it around to work in our favour.
Don’t let the enemy intimidate you with his lies, falsehoods, deviousness or anything else he tries to throw against you using other people, but let the wisdom of God cause you to walk strong and tall, as you become,
“wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” Matthew 10:16
